Weekend Wellness | No. 21

Hi, Friends! We hope you are ready to dig into the beauty of the Christmas season! Every year, we look forward to Christmas and celebrating our Savior.

Advent Sunday began on November 27, 2022, this year and we couldn’t think of a better focus today than to share what we are reading this Advent season. There are so many excellent resources out there for Advent reading and activities.

We have a few book recommendations to share with you today! All of these can be read alone or with your whole family. Sometimes, it is easy to forget how smart our little ones are. They comprehend the birth of Jesus so well. I am continually amazed!

This year as a family we are digging into The Dawn of Redeeming Grace. So far, we are loving it, even though we are just a day in!

Here are two that we have read and loved: Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus and Joy to the World. If you are looking for something light and fun, last year, I did a fun little advent devotional with a friend, Bring on the Merry. While we both enjoyed the devotional, we were looking for something a little deeper. This would be perfect for a new believer! We paired Bring on the Merry with Come, Thou Long-Expected Jesus.

For little ones, here are a few adorable options: 25 Days of the Christmas Story, The Way to the Manger, Twas the Season of Advent, and Countdown to Christmas.

If you have really little ones at home, don’t expect perfection. Trust us, they will still be hearing you while you read the stories out loud. One way to manage expectations is to explain to them what you are doing as a family and give them something to play with while you are reading. We love the classic Fisher Price Little People Nativity Set. When the story allows, take the time to let them use the characters to act out the verse/story. We try to make each night special by lighting candles and (sometimes) enjoying a special treat! A lot of the options above also have craft/family activities to do each day to coordinate with the story.

An Elf on the Shelf adjacent option would be The Sheperd on the Search. This would be a great activity for kids, bringing the real reason for the season back to Christ, rather than on the more commercialized Christmas we often see.

We would love to hear how you celebrate the Advent season!

Stay Well,
Tricia + Alisha
